Elderly care

Description

Description

Assistance in other life situations (benefits under Chapter 9 of Book Twelve of the Social Code—SGB XII) is available to those seeking help in situations such as illness, disability, or stressful life circumstances that cannot be managed on their own. This assistance may also be provided to individuals who are still able to support themselves but who, due to special circumstances, are dependent on public funds. The decisive factor in such cases is whether they can reasonably be expected to cover these costs from their income and assets.

Assistance available in other life situations includes:

  • Assistance for maintaining the household (Section 70 of SGB XII):
for individuals with their own household or living with other household members, if neither they nor the other household members are able to manage the household and it is necessary to maintain the household. As a rule, these benefits are intended to be provided only temporarily, unless doing so can prevent or postpone placement in an inpatient facility. They include personal care for household members as well as other activities necessary for the continuation of the household and may also be provided by covering the reasonable costs of temporary alternative housing for household members if, in special cases, such housing is necessary in addition to or instead of continuing the household
  • Elderly Care (Section 71 of Book XII of the Social Code):
to prevent, overcome, or alleviate difficulties arising from old age and to enable older adults to participate in social life (e.g., by securing housing suitable for older adults, providing counseling and support in accessing age-appropriate services or admission to a facility, counseling and support in the context of care, particularly regarding all matters related to housing options for those in need of assistance, support, or nursing care, as well as services that provide support or nursing care; and counseling and support in all matters related to accessing age-appropriate services).
  • Assistance for the Blind (Section 72 of Book XII of the Social Code):
for blind people to compensate for additional expenses resulting from blindness, provided they do not receive similar benefits under other legal provisions (e.g., state blindness allowance) or (in cases of proven need) as a supplement to the state blindness allowance.
Special rules apply, among other things, regarding the offsetting of home care services in care levels 2 through 5 against benefits under the Assistance for the Blind.
  • Assistance in Other Life Situations (Section 73 of SGB XII):
through the provision of cash benefits as a grant or as a loan, if the use of public funds is justified.
  • Funeral expenses (Section 74 of SGB XII):
by covering the necessary costs of a funeral, to the extent that they cannot be borne by the persons obligated to pay for the funeral (e.g., heirs).
