About the book: Juna is seventeen and, despite her failing eyesight, is determined to become a painter at any cost. Martha is thirteen and is doing everything she can to step out of the shadow of her talented sister. The two barely exchange a word. But then Juna’s prognosis takes a turn for the worse, and they realize that only together can they stand up to the world. With sensitivity and power, Cora Wucherer tells the story of an insatiable hunger for life and of a summer that changes everything.
For as long as they can remember, Juna and Martha have shared a room in their cramped family apartment in Munich-Giesing. But that’s about all the two sisters have in common. Juna, exceptionally gifted and threatened by a rare disease, learns that she likely has only a few months left before she loses her sight. Her dream of one day becoming an artist as significant as her great role model, Lotte Laserstein, seems to be shattering.
Her younger sister Martha, on the other hand, is fighting just to be seen at all. With Juna’s ID in her pocket, she lands a part-time job at a movie theater—and with it, a whole new sense of independence. When Juna is determined to see her favorite painting by Lotte Laserstein in Malmö, Martha seizes the opportunity and organizes a secret trip for the two of them. What begins as an adventure turns into an unexpected challenge—and the sisters find themselves pushed to the limits of what they thought they knew about each other.
