This has been done since 1957 because, according to the state office, it is a quick and reliable way of collecting population and employment statistics and their changes for political, administrative and economic purposes. In this official statistical survey, 1 percent of households are interviewed.

The households to be surveyed are contacted by post by the State Office for Statistics of Lower Saxony
(LSN) and asked for information. The survey can be conducted online, by paper questionnaire
or by telephone.

In order to determine the building structure at the selected addresses and the households to be contacted in advance of the survey, the LSN is once again deploying volunteer survey officers in some regions this year to clarify the addresses. All volunteer survey officers can identify themselves with the help of an ID card.
