The central aim of Lesestart Niedersachsen is to anchor the study of language, literature and books in children's everyday lives as early as possible and to make reading an integral part of family life. This is done in close cooperation with Lower Saxony's public libraries, more than 140 of which are involved in this campaign.
In order to reach as many one-year-old children as possible, the libraries cooperate with pediatricians, general practitioners and other partners. The experience of other reading and book start projects has shown that distributing the reading start kits in cooperation with pediatricians at the U6 check-up is the most effective form, as almost 90% of parents take up the offer of a check-up. Doctors are happy to support the project as they are aware of the positive effect of language-promoting measures.
