Every year, five rucksacks set off on a journey through 16 Salzgitter kindergartens. The backpacks are filled with new releases, classics and fairy tales.

The rucksacks spend four weeks with the children. They are read to and the children decide on their favorite book, which they then paint and do handicrafts with. At the big closing event in the Salzgitter Lebenstedt municipal library, the "Salzgitter picture book" is then chosen and the work of the kindergartens is exhibited.
