MedienScoutZ started in Salzgitter at the beginning of 2023. The "Youth and Democracy Education" team of the City of Salzgitter's Municipal Children and Youth Development Department has set itself the goal of strengthening the teaching of media skills in schools. Some of the voluntary pupils are trained as MediaScouts. They can then conduct low-threshold media lessons at their school and advise other young people on questions and problems in the digital world.

Our media education staff from the "Youth and Democracy Education" team work closely with the Salzgitter/Peine/Wolfenbüttel police station on the project.

Since the corona pandemic, our digital youth center has been available on Discord. All young people aged 16 and over (or 13 and over with parental permission) can "join" our Discord and make appointments with others, e.g. for a round of Minecraft together, talk about the day or write to the people in charge.

Children and young people have a lot of free time during the vacations. That's why we also have media offers during this time, for example at FETSZ (Ferienerlebnistage Salzgitter). Possible projects here are

• Stop-motion films (creating small films with e.g. building blocks)
• Creating green screen photos and films
• Introduction to programming with various tools
• Playing age-appropriate games (USK)
• LAN parties
• and much more

As adults, we also need to keep up to date with digital life. The fast pace of the internet means that we are constantly facing new challenges.

To ensure that we are not alone, there are regular training and further education courses on various topics that people working in education can register for. Specific invitations are sent out here.

Once a quarter, there is an information evening that is held completely digitally. Anyone interested (aged 16 and over) can register free of charge to receive information on previously announced topics. You can take part in the event online and don't have to worry about any reservations, childcare or other everyday challenges.

As young people have also expressed the desire to receive information and support in everyday digital life, these events are also aimed at young people aged 16 and over.

We would like to list a few key topics here so that you can get a brief idea of what topics may be covered at the information evenings and what challenges the digital world presents:

• Social networks and messengers - How to protect myself and still have fun - Alternatives to Meta and Co.
• Fake news: How do I recognize it, what do they do and what can I do?
• Gaming - USK, loot boxes, addiction?
• Cyberbullying - How can I recognize cyberbullying, what's behind it and how can I tackle it?
• And much more.
