Journey to the island of Neuwerk

Cuxhaven and Sahlenburg are the two starting points from which the island of Neuwerk can be reached. The journey depends on the tide times of the North Sea (low and high tide). There are several ways to get to the island.

With the wagon:

The mudflat trolleys of the many providers depart from their assembly point in the Sahlenburg district (Nordheimstraße rescue station). The main road, which is several kilometers long, leads directly to the beach and the starting point of the popular mudflat trips. There are also free parking spaces along the road.

A tidal flat trip to the island takes around 1.25 hours. As a tidal flat trolley can only take around twelve guests, it is generally advisable to make a reservation.

A ride on the Wadden Wagon is an experience. The passengers are also provided with blankets, because even in summer it can be cool and windy on a trip over the open sea (don't forget your hat and jacket!).

By boat:

The "MS-Flipper" departs almost daily from Cuxhaven (Alte Liebe ferry port). The crossing takes approx. 1.5 to 2 hours.

Reservations are recommended for larger groups and in summer. Parking is available north of Cassen-Eils-Straße in front of the harbor.

On foot:

The island can also be reached via the mudflats. The trail starts in Sahlenburg at the Nordheimstraße rescue station. It takes about 3 hours to walk the ten kilometers.

The path is marked by pricks/prigs (small plants) in the mudflats, which can only be seen at low tide. The tidal flat walking times (posted on the beach) must be observed. It is better and safer to hike with a guide.
