Over 60 years of youth and education camps

In 1961, after inspecting the site, the "Youth Care Committee" of the city of Salzgitter comes to the conclusion that the island of Neuwerk is particularly suitable for youth recreation.

60 years of youth and education camp (then 1), Neuwerk Island

A tent camp is created

"The island of Neuwerk, with its 70 or so inhabitants, offers the ideal conditions for a vacation or recreational stay, especially for young people. Away from all the hustle and bustle of the North and Baltic Seas and the East and North Frisian islands, Neuwerk really is an oasis of peace where time seems to stand still. The ride on high wheels through the mudflats from Cuxhaven-Duhnen to Neuwerk is uniquely beautiful.

The huge green spaces and meadows tempt everyone to play games and sports, not to mention the excellent bathing opportunities. One of the most beautiful memories are the walks on the health carpet of the mudflats. Breathe in the clear, pure, dust-free air that Salzgitter yearns for all year round.

As a nature reserve, the island encourages visitors to take a closer look at the flora and fauna of the area. About nine kilometers away from Neuwerk is the bird island Scharhörn, which is uninhabited by humans." (Excerpt from the report of the Salzgitter City Youth Council 1963).

This description of Neuwerk could also have prompted the teachers Alfred Wuttke from Lichtenberg and Willi Blume from Krähenriede to take their school classes camping on Neuwerk as early as 1958. In 1961, after inspecting the site, the "Youth Care Committee" of the city of Salzgitter came to the conclusion that the island of Neuwerk was particularly suitable for youth recreation, as it had hardly any official tourism and the associated restrictions.
