Information about Neuwerk

The island of Neuwerk is located 15 kilometers northwest of Cuxhaven in Lower Saxony and lies with its siblings Nigehörn and Scharhörn in the German Bight in the North Sea. With around 40 inhabitants, it belongs to the city of Hamburg and is Germany's smallest inhabited island.

Youth and education camp (tents), Neuwerk Island

The youth and education camp - Salzgitter's 32nd district

Due to the typical North Sea ebb and flow, the island can usually be reached once a day by boat, wagon or on foot (18 kilometers). The island's landmark and namesake can be seen from afar - the red brick tower Neuwerk.

The island is 3.3 square kilometers in size and is surrounded by the Neuwerk mudflats, which are part of the Hamburg Wadden Sea National Park. Its location is ideal for nature lovers, especially birdwatchers and those seeking peace and quiet.

Activities and excursions are possible all over the island. These include excursions to the unique seal banks or to its sister Scharhörn.

The island is surrounded by a seven-metre-high dyke, which can be walked around and leads to the boat landing stage, bathing areas, restaurants and many other places.

It is impossible to get lost on the island; a safe stay, even for small children, is practically guaranteed.

The view of the sea with its distant ships or the sea wall can be enjoyed day and night.

There are several restaurants on the island as well as several private houses, a nature park house, a small store ("Klein-Karstadt") and various accommodation options.

And of course the youth and education camp of the city of Salzgitter, which is also known as the 32nd district...

Lighthouse on the island of Neuwerk

The tower

The tower is the island's landmark and the oldest building on the German coast. It was built between 1299 and 1310 on a foundation of ungrouted boulders and is 45 meters high. The viewing platform can be reached via 138 steps. From there you have a magnificent view over the island, the Wadden Sea and the Elbe estuary.

Outbuilding, Neuwerk youth and education camp

The youth and education camp

The main building houses the dining hall, canteen kitchen and sanitary facilities. The small house is used individually, e.g. as a disco room, craft room, training room, day room and much more.

The "small house" can also be used as a group dormitory where camp beds are set up. The youth and education camp also has a recreation room with upholstered furniture, shelves/cupboards and a fridge.

National Park House, Neuwerk Island

The National Park House

People also like to visit the National Park House with its exhibitions. The house is run by the Jordsand Association on behalf of the National Park administration. We organize guided tours of the island, the salt marshes and the mudflats to the bird sanctuary island of Scharhörn with the staff of the Jordsand Association.

Hikes

Guided hikes to the bird island of Scharhörn allow you to experience the world of birds. The bird warden explains the development of the island and its ornithological significance.

Cemetery of the Nameless, Neuwerk Island

Cemetery of the nameless

The cemetery of the nameless is also worth a visit. Sailors who were washed ashore by the sea found their final resting place here.
