The exhibition series "Salon Salder - New Art from Lower Saxony" has been held in the former cowshed of Salder Castle since 1991. Every autumn, the city of Salzgitter presents the juxtaposition and interaction of established, avant-garde and innovative art from Lower Saxony. The Salon Salder has long been an established format that distinguishes contemporary art, questions conventions and opens up space for new ideas. The exhibition fulfills several functions: In addition to providing education and stimulating people's own creativity (extensive accompanying museum education program) and attracting national attention to the "Salon", it makes Salzgitter known beyond the city limits as a city of art. Since the Salon began, more than 200 artists have taken part in the annual exhibition and enriched it with their works.

An exhibition series finds "presence" in Salzgitter-Salder. As with the Salon Salder, the Municipal Art Collection would like to establish the still young exhibition series "präsenz". Artists from other federal states are invited to Salder to present their art here. This is how the title of the exhibition series came about: "präsenz" means presence, but also mental clarity, attention, presence of mind. When something becomes present, it becomes spatially and temporally present.

For one exhibition visit, works by artists from other parts of Germany can be experienced in Salder in terms of time and space. The exhibition series is intended to reflect art from other federal states. Their presence, their existence should be perceived in Salder. Do these artists have different approaches or points of view? What is their presence like?

More than 60 large artistic works are exhibited on urban green spaces according to the criteria of a museum tour. This open-air exhibition can be viewed free of charge at any time of day. Among the pieces that stand freely in the park landscape are works by artists who also show their works in public spaces in many important art cities.

Since 1975, the industrial and workers' city of Salzgitter has been collecting works of art from the beginning of the 20th century to the present day that are dedicated to the ever-present theme of "work".

From the very beginning, decisions on acquisitions have been made with artistic quality in mind. Illustrating the essence or social significance of work in the sense of a given or sought-after world view with artistic works was always out of the question. The collection - defined as a collection of motifs - unites works on the following themes: the workplace; the working person; traces of work in landscape and society such as tool(s). In etchings, woodcuts, drawings, photographs, watercolors and paintings, the city of Salzgitter thus concentrates a subtle collection of over 1,000 artistic works on the broad theme of work, ranging from "classical modernism" to works by contemporary artists. In addition to its artistic richness, the collection documents the constant change in the world of work in a way that is both striking and vivid.

"Memory of Work" is the exhibition format used by the Salzgitter Municipal Art Collection to present the works in the collection. With changing focal points and perspectives, the exhibition series provides an insight into the ever-present theme and the diverse ways in which artists deal with it in their works.
