Salzgitter

Important hub

A few archaeological finds from the Bleckenstedt district suggest that people were already living in the area in the Neolithic Age.

Its geographical location at a crossing point over the Aue river and marshland, which was once up to one kilometer wide, had a major influence on the development of the village. Bleckenstedt was probably a hub for important long-distance and regional connections for many centuries.

Bleckenstedt became nationally known at the end of the 15th century due to a feud that went down in history as the Battle of Bleckenstedt: in 1492, a dispute between the town of Brunswick and Duke Henry escalated over the confirmation of the town's privileges and recognition of the duke's claims to power. In February 1493, the troops from Hildesheim requested by the Brunswickers for support met the ducal forces near Bleckenstedt, who were defeated in battle.

The construction of the Reichswerke Hermann Göring in the immediate vicinity of Bleckenstedt was literally a profound turning point for the inhabitants of the village. The connections to the neighboring communities to the east of Bleckenstedt were cut by the construction of the branch canal, and roads suddenly ended at the canal embankment. Farmland belonging to the expropriated and resettled Bleckenstedt farmers was combined to form an estate, and agricultural land on the western edge of Bleckenstedt was converted into a large market garden.

At the end of the 1950s, the Konrad trade union began building a mine near Bleckenstedt to exploit the underground ore deposits. Almost seven million tons of iron ore were extracted from the Konrad shaft, the youngest former iron ore mine in the city, before the economic situation for domestic ore deteriorated in the early 1970s and operations were therefore discontinued on 30 September 1976. Today, Schacht Konrad is owned by the federal government, which is having the former mine converted into a repository for low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste.

The Bleckenstedt district is located on the west bank of the Stichkanal, directly on Industriestraße Nord. It is the southernmost of the four canal villages. After the large nursery closed its doors for good in 1963, the "Alte Gärtnerei" development area was built on part of the former site at the beginning of the 21st century.

Since November 2023, a boulder in the forest between Hallendorf and Bleckenstedt has commemorated the more than 30,000 prisoners, at least 932 of whom died.

Since June 2024, a historical and memorial plaque in the cemetery has commemorated the dead of the bombing raid on March 29, 1945 and the fighting during the liberation on April 11, 1945.
