The fact that the area has been an attractive settlement area for people for thousands of years is shown by finds from the Bronze, Iron and Imperial Ages, which were recovered in the 20th century.
In the Middle Ages, Dorstadt Monastery, located around 20 kilometers to the east, was the largest landowner in Bruchmachtersen. The church was owned by the people of Dorstadt until the abolition of the monastery in 1810. According to the poll tax description of 1678, 94 taxable persons lived in 34 households in Bruchmachtersen, which belonged to the Lichtenberg district. The tax description also allows conclusions to be drawn about the economic conditions in the village. In contrast to the surrounding villages of Lesse, Ober- and Niederfreden (now Lichtenberg), Salder and Lebenstedt, there were no wealthy farmers in Bruchmachtersen, only farmhands, cottagers and shepherds.
Bruchmachtersen remained characterized by small-scale farming for the next two centuries. The upper and lower Sukopsmühle mills, which are located outside the district above and below the country road running parallel to the highway, are also centuries old. The street name "An der Heerstraße" indicates that the road has been in use since the earliest times.
The founding of the Reichswerke Hermann Göring in 1937 initially had less of an impact on Bruchmachtersen than on the villages closer to the reconstruction area. Barrack camps were set up to the north of the village, housing French prisoners of war, among others. These returned home after the end of the war, and refugees and displaced persons moved into the barracks. After the dilapidated buildings were demolished in the 1950s, the area initially lay fallow before commercial buildings were erected there.
Even today, the district of Bruchmachtersen, which belongs to the village of Nord, still scores highly with its abundance of water. The Mühlgraben, which has since been partially piped, flows through the village, the Fuhse is not far away and the man-made Salzgittersee, the city's largest recreational area, is within walking distance.
Almost exactly one in ten of Bruchmachtersen's 750 residents supported the district's volunteer fire department as a sustaining member in 2019. The fire department, with its large children's and youth section, and the Bruchmachtersen ball sports club are among the district's assets.
