Current: Since January 1, 2026: No more free sale of rodenticides (rat poison) to private individuals
Since January 1, 2026, a change in the law has come into force according to which non-expert private individuals are no longer permitted to buy and use rodenticides (rat poison) to control mice and rats. A sell-off period applies until mid-2026, after which free sale to private individuals will no longer be possible.
Why this step is important:
No sustainable pest control: after the acute control of a rat infestation with rat poison, causes such as improper handling of waste remain. It is therefore important to eliminate the cause in order to prevent an infestation in the long term. Specifically, this means: No waste outside of garbage cans! (see also Preventive measures).
Environmental protection: Rodenticides are often hardly or not at all biodegradable and accumulate in soil, water and food chains.
Animal welfare: Many poisons lead to agonizing death through internal bleeding, which means prolonged suffering.
Protection of non-target animals: Pets, birds, hedgehogs, foxes and other animals can be poisoned, as can predators that eat poisoned prey.
Risk to humans and pets: Dogs, cats and especially children can accidentally ingest poison, even small amounts can be life-threatening.
Danger of uncontrolled use: Without specialist knowledge, poisons are often incorrectly dosed or used in unsuitable places, breeding resistance to poisons can develop.
Preventive measures without rat poison are possible and sensible.
These include, among other things:
- Keeping waste garbage cans closed,
- Do not leave food scraps (even in the compost heap) out in the open,
- Design bird feeders so that they are inaccessible to rats.

How to prevent rat infestation
No food, no rats!
Rats go where they find food. You can prevent this with these simple measures:
- Waste garbage cans must always be closed.
- Do not store waste next to waste garbage cans.
- Report defective waste garbage cans to the municipal waste management company (SRB).
- Only put out yellow bags on collection day.
- Notify the landlord/landlady if the waste garbage cans are insufficient.
- Do not dispose of leftover food in the toilet or sink.
- Keep cellars and storage rooms clean and closed.
- Store pet food safely.
- Place bird feeders out of reach of rats.
How property owners can prevent rat infestations on their properties
- Check waste garbage cans regularly for leaks.
- Check drain grates of large waste garbage cans regularly.
- Report defective waste garbage cans to the municipal waste management company (SRB).
- Seal unused drains and pipe outlets.
- Secure window and ventilation shafts with metal grilles.
- Keep ditches and plantings clean.
- Check composters and do not throw food waste into them.
