How can I collect Climate Taler?
The Climate Taler app measures the distances traveled fully automatically in the background, differentiates between the types of mobility and calculates the respective CO2 balance for each route.
In addition, there are Climate Thalers for low electricity or water consumption.
What can I do with the climate tokens?
Retailers, restaurants, service providers and cultural institutions can create an account on Klima-Taler.com easily and free of charge and set up their own offers, which are displayed in the app. Users can also select rewards outside their own local authority area.
There is a wide range of rewards, as each provider decides individually what to offer for the Klima-Taler. You can find everything from discounted admission to cultural institutions or sports facilities, to two-for-three offers at the bakery, to service offers from bicycle repair shops.
How does the participating provider benefit?
Participation is free of charge for local suppliers. In return for benefits such as a small discount or an additional service, they receive more attention from their customers and have the opportunity to reach new potential customers.
They can use the topic of climate protection to position themselves as climate-conscious and make a contribution.
What about data protection?
Participation does not require registration. Citizens do not need to provide an email address, name or telephone number. Hosting and data processing take place in Germany, ISO 27001-certified, user-oriented, transparent and GDPR-compliant.
And what data is used?
The mobile data is processed completely anonymously. However, it provides municipalities with interesting and valuable insights into mobility behavior, which in turn can be used for targeted and efficient traffic planning.
What playful elements are there?
Monthly CO2 rankings between municipalities, schools and independent teams (employers, clubs, etc.) motivate users to do more and push their own team forward. Users collect awards for achieving targets.
Valuable Climate Taler can also be earned by saving electricity, heat and water by entering the respective meter readings into the app.
What is the idea behind the Klima-Taler app?
The Climate Taler app is an answer to a problem of behavioral economics: knowledge about climate change does not automatically change the habits of individuals. However, if the knowledge brings a direct benefit, this has a lasting motivating effect.
With its reward system, the app aims to encourage self-efficacy and active engagement with one's own carbon footprint.
What does the regional association have to do with it?
The regional association has acquired a "regional license" for the greater Braunschweig area: This means that every municipality in the association's area can use the app free of charge for up to two years.
The regional association would like to give the municipalities the opportunity to do something for their own CO2 balance at a low threshold, to encourage citizens to participate and thus to do something for the CO2 targets of the entire region as broadly as possible.
Ralf Sygusch, Association Director, sees opportunities for both the municipalities and the region in the regional license: "With this offer to the municipalities, we are providing them with a cost-effective opportunity to do something for their carbon footprint. And the more municipalities that take part, the greater the positive effect for the entire region. One more building block for achieving our regional climate targets."
Where does the concept come from?
The Climate Thaler(https://klima-taler.com) (opens in a new tab) is an app from the Berlin-based greentech company Blacksquared. More than 20 municipalities across Germany belong to the Climate Thaler network (e.g. Cologne, Königstein, Kempen or Gladbeck); there are also cities participating internationally (e.g. in Finland or the city of Vienna). The idea received the Sustainability Award 2025 in October 2024.
