This is the third school forest project after the citizens' forest in Thiede and the school forest of the Salzgitter-Bad grammar school in Lange Wanne.
The city of Salzgitter is providing the area for the school forest project from its nature conservation areas. In return, it will receive an ecological forest, which will be an important identification factor for the citizens and pupils.
Everyone involved will have the opportunity to "see the forest grow". The city of Salzgitter is thus supporting this project as part of its climate protection activities. Once a reforestation plan has been drawn up, the first major planting campaign at Kranich-Gymnasium is expected to take place in spring 2016.
In 2014, the Future Forest Foundation and Kranich High School took up the idea of creating a school forest in Salzgitter-Lebenstedt.
Mayor Frank Klingebiel handed over the first tree of the planned forest, a native oak, as part of the signing of the lease agreement for the establishment of the school forest in the auditorium of the Salzgitter-Bad grammar school.
He thanked everyone involved for their commitment. "Just as we need the forest, it needs us. We need to preserve it - especially in view of climate change - and protect it for future generations. In short: our forest needs young people like you!"
The Lord Mayor emphasized that with the school forest, the pupils are also taking responsibility for something vital and for our future. "You are actively involved in our environment and are helping to create a new green oasis along the Fuhse. I think it's great when young people nowadays don't just hang around in front of the computer or TV, but spend time outdoors, discovering nature and protecting it. Thank you very much for your commitment!"
