The concept envisages the further upgrading of Salzgittersee and the Thermalsolbad. The alliance is also currently working on corresponding proposals for the other cities in the region.

"The aim," said Lord Mayor Frank Klingebiel in his opening speech, "is to make the region around Braunschweig, Salzgitter and Wolfsburg a nationwide reference region for work and quality of life by 2020."

According to the Alliance, Salzgittersee in particular is one of the most popular addresses with its extensive range of sports, leisure and recreational activities - even beyond the region's borders.

Several offer modules are possible for further development.

These include a conference hotel, a youth hostel, a beach club with a high ropes course, a water sports information center, a beach promenade with restaurants and a pool in the lake. However, a development of the eastern shore in the area of the clubs, which will remain unaffected, and the lakeside terrace is also proposed.

The Thermalsolbad, a combination of saltwater and wave pool, is being considered for further development into a health and wellness facility.

This could include an expansion of the sauna area, a renovation of the thermal pool area with the dismantling of the wave pool and an upgrading of the fitness area and catering facilities.
