Salzgitter

The mayors of the cities of Braunschweig, Wolfsburg and Salzgitter have jointly developed a strategy paper to strengthen the region from the Harz Mountains to the Heath in competition with other locations.

To this end, Ulrich Markurth, Klaus Mohrs and Frank Klingebiel want to network the regional centers more closely with each other through better transport connections and an efficient information infrastructure. They jointly presented the strategy paper today, Friday, March 20, in Braunschweig.

A central concern of the city leaders is to improve mobility in the region. They want to make local public transport more attractive for commuters between the three regional centers and districts as well as for education, shopping and leisure travel.

The high-volume regional rail connections between the three regional centers should be operated every half hour in future. Express bus lines could also supplement the improved rail service. To enable the Zweckverband Großraum Braunschweig (ZGB) to implement these optimizations, the three mayors are calling for a significant increase in regionalization funding from the state.

Another important demand is the prompt expansion of the Weddel loop for rail traffic. In future, people should be able to change between modes of transport more easily at central mobility centers. For example, there are plans to set up rental stations for electric vehicles and bicycles.
