Salzgitter

"For the dignity of our cities"

On Thursday, February 25, the Salzgitter City Council passed a resolution on the fundamental reorganization of the municipal financial system.

This is addressed to the President of the Bundesrat and the Minister Presidents of the federal states.

Salzgitter is thus supporting the campaign alliance "For the dignity of our cities", of which the city is also a member. With the resolution, the participating local authorities are calling for a plenary debate on the financial system in the German Bundesrat.

On 23 September 2015, Lord Mayor Frank Klingebiel, together with the chief administrative officers of 30 cities and 2 districts, called for a reorganization of social burden financing, measures to strengthen municipal investment promotion and a special repayment programme to reduce disproportionate debt in the so-called "Berlin Declaration" initiated by the action alliance.

The coalition of so many local authorities generated political pressure that the German Bundestag held a plenary debate on the inequality of living conditions in German municipalities on September 24, 2015.

The top priority for the action alliance, whose members are also active in the municipal umbrella organizations, is to call for a political initiative to fundamentally reorganize the financial system before the end of this legislative period.

Background:

Nationwide, more than 64 cities, districts and municipalities have now joined together to form a cross-party action alliance "For the dignity of our cities". Together, they want to draw public and political attention to the fact that living conditions in the municipalities are no longer equal.

The temporary action alliance, which was founded in North Rhine-Westphalia, opened up nationwide some time ago. In addition to Salzgitter, the city of Cuxhaven in Lower Saxony is also a member.
