Salzgitter

In memory of Wilhelm Beukele

Wilhelm Beukele has been dead for a good 30 years, but is still very much alive in the minds of many Salzgitter residents. A street in Thiede was named after him on Wednesday in his memory.

Theresa Neumann, Hartmut Alder, Bertold Wittfeld, Norbert Puth and Christian Striese are delighted with the new street sign

The street next to the elementary school on Dr.-Heinrich-Jasper-Straße was not chosen by chance, as Wilhelm Beukele was a teacher at the elementary school, which was housed in the current primary school building, for 33 years.

His pupils also included local mayor Hartmut Alder and his deputy Norbert Puth, as both recounted at the unveiling of the street sign. Above all, however, Wilhelm Beukele was a proven expert on Huguenots.

From 1936 until his death in 1985, he published 72 books on the subject and maintained many contacts all over the world. Hartmut Alder said that there had long been a desire to erect a memorial to Wilhelm Beukele in his home town of Thiede. Now the first step has been taken with the naming of the street next to the school.
