Lord Mayor Frank Klingebiel commented: "The VW Group's decision in favor of Salzgitter is a great signal for our city and our region. Salzgitter, with its location in the heart of the Volkswagen world, with its expertise from the pilot line, with the existing infrastructure and expansion areas, offers the best conditions for a positive location decision, which was reason enough for me and the council parties to initiate a joint resolution, which was also met with great approval by the General Works Council."
Klingebiel continued: "Everyone involved symbolized unity and sent an important signal to the Management Board and Supervisory Board. For a long time, I have held intensive talks with the state government, the members of the Board of Management and the Works Council of VW, which focused on the advantages of our location and its importance for Salzgitter. I would like to thank everyone involved and am delighted that it was announced yesterday that Salzgitter has been earmarked for battery cell production. It means a great deal for our city, which is struggling with extraordinary multiple problems, but also for the people who live here and are either closely connected to the VW plant themselves or through family members. A decision that is not only enthusiastically received today, but that will also have an impact in the future. Salzgitter will play an important role in the Group's transformation process and will therefore remain competitive in the future."
