Mayor Frank Klingebiel and Werner Kittel, Chairman of the AWO Salzgitter-Wolfenbüttel district association, were among those in attendance.

Klingebiel emphasized that "a lot is currently being done to meet the needs of young people, especially in daycare centers." According to Klingebiel, the networks in this area in particular are working and there is a tried and tested system to fall back on. Klingebiel expressly thanked all the partners involved.

Kittel added: "I am delighted with all my heart that the AWO has prevailed and is able to take over the sponsorship of the new daycare center and is therefore jointly responsible for the future of the children." Kittel also thanked everyone involved after a "great collaboration".

On December 18, 2019, the Salzgitter City Council approved the construction of two crèche and three kindergarten groups. It is being funded by the state of Lower Saxony from the Integration Fund.

The single-storey building is to be constructed as a solid, thermally insulated structure. The kindergarten and crèche areas are separated from each other by the central communal area with the administration rooms, the food supply, the exercise room and the parents' meeting point.

The building is characterized by a generous interior design and offers a wide range of options for the design of the childcare facilities, such as a learning workshop and a creative area, a spacious children's cafeteria and an exercise room that invites children to play and run around. Healthy eating is also an important part of the daycare center's concept.

The AWO concept states: "In addition to the upbringing, education and care of the children, a daycare center has the task of having a positive impact on the district. It is important to create anchor points that convey identity." With this in mind, the new daycare center will focus on "music".

Completion is currently expected in December 2022.
