Press release City of Salzgitter/WEVG
District heating in Salzgitter - that means a safe, convenient and environmentally
environmentally friendly supply of heating energy and hot water.
WEVG's district heating comes from the Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH (SZFG) power plant.

Climate protection concept of the city of Salzgitter
Frank Klingebiel, Lord Mayor and Chairman of the WEVG Supervisory Board: "In order to achieve the 2050 climate protection targets, all sectors must be involved. Industry can and will make a significant contribution to this. Frank Klingebiel continues: "As a local energy supplier, WEVG is not only involved in the hydrogen projects, but also in the use of waste heat from the Salzgitter Flachstahl power plant. Supplying Bosch in Salzgitter with district heating can achieve annual CO2 savings of around 1,750 tons. The WEVG Supervisory Board approved the necessary funding for this important investment in the future on
investment in the future on May 20."
For comparison: with the savings, you could drive around the world almost 400 times with a
drive around the globe with a mid-range diesel.
This is a major step towards CO2 neutrality at the Bosch site here in Salzgitter. Michael Gensicke, Member of the Board of Management of Robert Bosch Elektronik GmbH: "The connection to the WEVG district heating network enables us on the one hand to make our site even more efficient in terms of CO2 neutrality. On the other hand, this joint success represents an important building block for the exemplary CO2 neutrality of a factory, which we are testing and investigating in the "Factory Transformation" sub-project of the Wasserstoff Campus Salzgitter together with the Fraunhofer IST. Other locations and companies should also benefit from these building blocks, which will ultimately provide a kind of "blueprint" for CO2 neutrality in the future." And, incidentally, industry and energy suppliers are jointly supporting the city of Salzgitter's climate protection concept.
District heating for Bosch
Rainer Krause (WEVG) reports that the existing WEVG supply network will be extended by around 1.5 kilometers so that the Bosch site can also benefit from the waste heat. "The first work was already started in mid-April," says Krause, "The integration into the existing district heating network will take place in the area of the southern shore of Salzgittersee. From there, the DN 200 plastic-sheathed pipeline will be laid, offering potential for further connections to other companies in the industrial and commercial area. The first step has been taken."
The flow temperature is a maximum of 130 degrees, the return about 70 degrees. The pipe will be laid at a depth of around 110 cm, exclusively in the public space and using the open construction method. "The construction period will last until around the end of September if everything can be implemented as planned," explains Rainer Krause, "by then we will have moved around 3,500 cubic meters of excavated soil. The work may result in temporary road traffic restrictions. We ask for your understanding."
District heating transport to the home
In Salzgitter, waste heat from the steelworks of Salzgitter AG has been used for 60 years.
Salzgitter AG has been used for 60 years. The district heating supply via WEVG, primarily in residential buildings, comes 100% from the waste heat from Salzgitter Flachstahl.
The WEVG district heating network is approximately 50 kilometers long. Currently, over 6,400 residential and commercial units in Salzgitter are supplied with district heating.
These include three schools and 33 building complexes, such as the town hall in Lebenstedt, the Citytor Center, the Federal Office for Radiation Protection and the Hotel am See. Thanks to the existing extensive use of district heating, waste heat can also be a good alternative for supplying heat to factories.
The WEVG management is looking forward to continuing its excellent
cooperation with industry here in Salzgitter and would like to thank the relevant municipal departments for their excellent support in implementing the project.
