Salzgitter

The year 2021 in Salzgitter

Despite the ongoing global coronavirus pandemic, Salzgitter once again had a number of outstanding events in 2021.

In February, three projects on the use of hydrogen were launched at the new Wasserstoffcampus Salzgitter. These involve the use of hydrogen technologies in manufacturing processes, the development of steel tanks for transporting and storing the energy source and an innovation network to establish a hydrogen cluster for Salzgitter.

The overall momentum at the Salzgitter Hydrogen Campus continues to grow. For example, a joint project is researching how a concrete hydrogen value chain can become a reality in Salzgitter.

A nationwide signature campaign aimed at revoking the permit for the planned nuclear waste repository Schacht Konrad began in early June. This supports the application that BUND and NABU, together with the Salzgitter against KONRAD alliance, submitted to the Lower Saxony Environment Minister on May 27, 2021.

Signatures were accepted until August 31, 2021 and the campaign is supported by a broad alliance consisting of the KONRAD Mine Working Group, BI Lüchow-Dannenberg, .ausgestrahlt, IG Metall Salzgitter-Peine, Landvolk Braunschweiger Land, the City of Salzgitter, BISS Braunschweig, BUND and NABU.
On September 4, 2021, the signatures were handed over to the state government in the presence of Lord Mayor Frank Klingebiel as part of a colorful campaign in Hanover.

At its meeting on June 17, the city council unanimously decided to support the revocation of the planning approval decision for the Konrad mine.

The Eiszeitgarten at Salder Castle Municipal Museum has been offering two new attractions since July.

The new "reindeer wall" is over 10 meters long and up to 2 meters high: the wall is covered with weatherproof foil on which a herd of reindeer can be seen running. It gives an excellent impression of the natural force of such a herd in motion.

The life-size figure of a giant deer made of fiberglass and artificial fur:
The figure is a representation of not just any subspecies, but the largest and best-known representative: Megaloceros giganteus!

The Eiszeitgarten in the outdoor area of the municipal museum shows what the animal and plant world looked like in Central Europe during the Ice Age, when people lived there.

The Kommunalwahl took place in September, at which Lord Mayor Frank Klingebiel was confirmed in office for a further five years until 2026.

Eight parties and one electoral association are now represented on the city council, which has also been elected for the next five years. The 46 seats on the council are divided as follows: SPD (16), CDU (14), AfD (5), Greens (4), FDP (2), Die Linke (2), Freie Wähler (1), MBS (1), Die Partei (1)

Finally, digital media: the city's YouTube channel exceeded the 1.9 million film views mark in 2021. Over 2,850 users have already subscribed to it to be informed about new films from the city at short notice. The city's official fan page can also be found on the digital network Facebook. It already has over 4,900 "likes".

The Twitter channel is also used regularly to spread the latest news even faster. Subscribers to the channel receive the news in a compact 280 characters. Over 1,750 users already follow the city's channel.
