Driver's license exchange for those born between 1959 and 1964

Whether it's a grey card, pink cardboard or white plastic card: driving licenses issued before January 19, 2013 must be exchanged for the new EU driving license by 2033. This will happen in stages. The next deadline is January 19, 2023.

Those born between 1959 and 1964 must exchange their driving licenses.
The Citizen Service and Order Department would like to point out that the driving licenses of persons born between 1959 and 1964 who still hold an old (pink or grey) paper driving license must be exchanged by the deadline of 19.01.2023.

People born before 1953 who still have a paper driver's license have until 19.01.2033 to exchange it.

The BürgerService und Ordnung department asks for your understanding that there may be delays in the processing of applications and the availability of the Salzgitter driving license office due to the increasing number of exchange applications. It is therefore all the more important to make an appointment in good time.

How do I exchange my driver's license?

The mandatory exchange initially concerns citizens who still have gray or pink paper driving licenses and were born between 1959 and 1964. For this group, the driving license must be converted by 19.01.2023.

Citizens who wish to have their driving license exchanged need to make an appointment at the Salzgitter car service park in Neißestraße. This appointment can be booked via the website of the city of Salzgitter (www.salzgitter.de, keyword "Online-Terminvergabe") or by telephone via the hotline 05341/839-3000.

The following documents must be brought to the booked appointment:

  • valid identity document (identity card, passport)
  • current biometric photo
  • current driving license
  • a fee of 30.40 euros, as the completed driving license will be sent directly to the citizen; a second appointment for collection is therefore not necessary (card payment is possible in the car service park)
  • If the driver's license was not issued in Salzgitter: Request a copy of the driver's license card from the issuing authority before applying and have it sent to the driver's license office of the city of Salzgitter.

The change in the law on the mandatory exchange of old and unlimited driving licenses came into force on 19.03.2019. All gray or pink paper driving licenses and permanent card driving licenses must be exchanged for the temporary card driving license.

For paper driving licenses, the deadline for the exchange depends on the year of birth, for card driving licenses issued before 19.03.2013 (date of issue can be found under no. 4a on the driving license), on the year of issue.

The exchange of driving licenses is a purely administrative matter - the driving license itself basically remains unchanged. There may be exceptions for category 2 (trucks) or category T (large tractors). Additional medical examinations or other tests such as a repeat of the driving test are not associated with this.

The new driving license is then valid for 15 years. The time limit is intended to make forgery more difficult, as the passport photo and personal data are regularly updated.

The first deadline applied to those born between 1953 and 1958, who had to have converted their driving licenses by 19 July 2022.
