Well-wishers at the constituent meeting

First Mayor Stefan Klein, City of Salzgitter Head of Department Dr. Dirk Härdrich, Equal Opportunities Officer Simone Semmler and Youth Parliament Managing Director Deborah Gollbach came to the Kulturscheune to congratulate the new members.
"You are the partners of the adult parliament," said Klein, explaining the importance of the youth parliament to the new members. "Because we get impulses from you in the council that we wouldn't otherwise have." Gollbach added: "The exchange with politicians is an important point for you in the coming years." Härdrich thanked the young people for their commitment: "Democracy always means participation and commitment to your own community!" In addition, there is always a need to exchange different opinions in a committed manner, but also to respect the opinion of the other side. And compromise, the agreement on a joint solution, is the instrument with which something can be achieved in a democracy.

After 2014, 2016, 2018 and 2020, the fifth youth parliament in Salzgitter is now starting its work. It consists of 13 Salzgitter residents between the ages of 14 and 20. This includes six young people who were already represented in the Youth Parliament during the 4th electoral term.

Farewell to old members

But the old members were also bid farewell. "You did a great job, despite the difficult conditions during the pandemic," said the Managing Director of the Youth Parliament, praising the former parliamentarians. "It was great to see you grow in this task," she added.

She cited as examples that, thanks to the commitment of the young people, a survey with over 300 participants on the project "Construction of a pump track facility in Gebhardshagen" could be carried out, the results of which were incorporated into the work of the working group, in which the youth parliament also participated; the parliament's 2020 Christmas project: the anti-racism campaign as part of "Black Lives Matter", in which they made a statement for more respect and equal treatment with large posters throughout the city and the call for a poster campaign. However, Gollbach also addressed the young people's commitment to "Salzgittersee development", who called for an examination of areas on Salzgittersee for use as a skate park and for graffiti areas, among other things, which was then approved by the council.

What does the youth parliament do?

The Youth Parliament meets publicly eight times a year. It receives suggestions and requests from children and young people in Salzgitter and develops possible solutions that are implemented in cooperation with the city administration or forwarded to the council or the specialist committees.

It is involved in measures taken by the administration and the council that affect the interests of children and young people.
The Youth Parliament can also set up open working groups to deal with specific issues. All young people from Salzgitter can also participate in these groups.
