This action was initiated by the General Staff Council of the City of Salzgitter and was expressly supported by Lord Mayor Frank Klingebiel and the administrative management. The aim was to send a clear signal against war, violence and displacement.
Mario Römer, Chairman of the city's General Staff Council, emphasized: "We expressly condemn the war in Ukraine triggered by President Putin. This breach of the peace and thus of international law is in no way comprehensible or justifiable. Our thoughts are with the children and mothers who have to spend frightened nights in bunkers, with the Ukrainian soldiers who are risking their lives in the fight for freedom and with the many refugees who have had to leave their homes."
Mayor Frank Klingebiel, who had already condemned Russian President Putin's criminal war of aggression in the strongest possible terms at the vigil organized by the "Salzgitter passt auf" alliance last Monday, 28 February, was also present at the action and added: "I expressly support the idea of our employee representatives to send a visible signal against this warlike madness together as a city administration. My thoughts and prayers are with the people in Ukraine, who are suffering immensely as a result of this criminal war of aggression."
