At the event, Second Mayor Christian Striese thanked them for their special commitment and said: "Being a Ortsheimatpfleger means much more than simply dealing with the history of your own district. Each and every one of them is a researcher, a teacher, a living encyclopaedia and an important link to historical science at the same time. They make a district a home because they show the citizens their historical roots."
Holger Rogge from Salzgitter-Bad was appointed Ortsheimatpfleger for the first time. During the event, Horst Helms was honored for his 30th anniversary as Ortsheimatpfleger of Beddingen. Hartmut Alder (Thiede), Norbert Zachries (Lesse), Heinz Hermann Ahrens (Drütte) and Sigrid Lux (Heerte) have also been involved for over 30 years.
A minute's silence was also held in memory of the Ortsheimatpfleger who had passed away during the previous term of office.
The current tenth term of office of the 29 Ortsheimatpfleger appointed by the Salzgitter City Council runs until 2026. They were nominated by the respective local councils.
On volunteering in Ortsheimatpfleger:
Through their work, Ortsheimatpfleger promote the historical connection of citizens with their district and the city. They maintain, preserve and record historical information, contexts and values. They can pass this on to interested citizens in lectures, tours or written publications.
The Ortsheimatpfleger are supported by the team at the city archive. Among other things, regular training courses and meetings are held. Anyone interested can contact the town archive by telephone or emailarchivstadt.salzgitterde or 05341/839-2124).
