Volunteers are urgently needed along the migration routes on the B248 north of Barum, at the sports field in Lobmachtersen and on a long stretch south of Beddinger Holz to collect the toads and newts in the evening hours.
Even though the nights will still be cool and winter may be returning, preparations are already underway for this year's amphibian migration.
As soon as the green amphibian protection fences known from the spring have been erected, hard-working volunteers will once again be out and about collecting toads, frogs and newts from numerous spawning migration routes throughout the city.
The animals run along the fences in the area of the supervised migration routes and fall into buckets dug into the ground. They have to be removed from these buckets, identified if possible, recorded and transferred to transport buckets so that they can be released on the other side of the road.
As some of the long-standing collectors will not be able to be there this year, the lower nature conservation authority of the city of Salzgitter is urgently looking for volunteers, especially along the hiking routes on the B248 north of Barum, at the sports field in Lobmachtersen and along a long stretch south of Beddinger Holz, to collect the toads and newts in the evening hours.
Information for the future volunteer collectors:
- A short briefing, including on the conditions of the respective collection route, is provided by employees of the nature conservation authority or by experienced collectors on site.
- Using simple identification aids, you can learn to distinguish between the individual animals within a short time.
- The necessary collecting utensils are provided.
Depending on the weather, collecting is probably necessary from the end of February until April, always after dark. - As a rule, the collection takes place on a specific day of the week, which is coordinated with the rest of the collection team on the individual hiking routes.
- Anyone with questions about this important task can contact the team at the lower nature conservation authority (telephone number 05341/839-3695 or 839-3206).
