Floods, heavy rain and more and more hot days: the climate crisis can be felt in many areas. What can we do? Get active for climate protection.

Floods, heavy rain and more and more hot days: the climate crisis can be felt in many areas. What can we do? Get active for climate protection. The Salzgitter Volkshochschule (VHS), in cooperation with the Peine District Volkshochschule (KVHS), is offering a new free "klimafit" course starting in April. Anyone interested can register for the course and continue their education.

To this end, the Volkshochschule (VHS) of the city of Salzgitter, in cooperation with the Kreisvolkshochschule (KVHS) Peine, is offering the new free course "klimafit", which starts in April. Anyone interested can register for the course and continue their education.

Over the course of six evenings - four in person and two online - interested parties will learn more about climate protection management in Salzgitter and Peine and how they can get involved. They will learn about the causes of the climate crisis, from the global to the regional and local level, as well as what they can do about it in their own environment.

For example, the course teaches participants how they can reduce CO2 emissions by changing their daily behavior, for example when eating, heating or using transport. However, climate protection measures can also be initiated in the areas of politics and finance, for example through the active participation of citizens or petitions, but also through climate-protecting investments.

In addition, course participants will have the opportunity to exchange ideas with climate scientists, regional and local experts and initiatives. The training course is aimed at all those who want to promote climate protection.

After successfully completing the "klimafit" course, participants receive their "klimafit" certificate, which distinguishes them as multipliers for municipal climate protection.

Background:

WWF Germany and the Helmholtz Research Alliance "Regional Climate Change and Humans" (REKLIM) jointly developed the "klimafit" course in 2017. As the third project partner, the University of Hamburg is conducting the accompanying social science research for the project. Local climate protection officers, representatives of local initiatives and scientists are supporting the courses with specialist contributions. At the end of last year, the course received the "National Award - Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)" from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the German UNESCO Commission.

The project is supported by regional partners, including ecolo - Agentur für Ökologie und Kommunikation, LIFE Bildung Umwelt Chancengleichheit e.V., Verein Zukunftsfähiges Thüringen e.V., Projekt Nachhaltigkeitszentrum Thüringen, KlimaKom eG, ifpro - Institut für Fortbildung und Projektmanagement, Institut für angewandtes Stoffstrommanagement (IfaS) am Umwelt-Campus Birkenfeld der Hochschule Trier and KlimaDiskurs.NRW e.V.

Since January 2022, the educational project has been funded for three years by the National Climate Initiative of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection (BMWK) based on a resolution of the German Bundestag.
