Mobility surveys provide the necessary data basis

For almost a year now, numerous citizens in various municipalities in the Braunschweig region have been surveyed about their everyday mobility behavior.

The Greater Braunschweig Regional Association is taking part in two surveys running in parallel throughout Germany. Both will be completed in 2024.

"It is important for us that as many people as possible take part in the survey," says association director Ralf Sygusch, once again calling for participation. "Regardless of whether the respondents travel a lot or a little, how they are mobile, where they live or work. Taken together, all the findings form the best data basis for our future transport planning."

"We would like to thank everyone in the region who has already taken part in the survey and ask those who still receive mail to take part." Many households will be contacted again in the first quarter of the year.

On the one hand, there is the survey for the "Mobility in Cities - SrV" research project, which is currently running simultaneously in more than 500 German cities and municipalities. On the other hand, the survey for the "Mobility in Germany" (MiD) study is running in parallel with almost 100,000 households in Germany.

Essentially, both surveys are concerned with the means of transportation used by citizens to complete their everyday journeys and the distances covered. As the requirements for mobility vary greatly from person to person, questions are also asked, for example, about age, possession of a driving license and the accessibility of stops.

The survey is used to collect mobility data from a sufficiently large number of people for each day of the year. Differences (weekday/Sunday, public holidays, vacation time, weather conditions) are included in the survey.

In addition to specific findings for the greater Braunschweig area, the anonymized evaluation also provides nationwide trends that are taken into account in transport planning. These include the mobility of certain groups of people such as senior citizens or children or the use of sharing services.

Participation in the survey is voluntary. It can be carried out by telephone or online. All households in the sample will receive a letter informing them about the survey and asking them to participate.
