The construction of the North Primary School in Salzgitter-Lebenstedt began in January with the symbolic ground-breaking ceremony. The plan is to build an elementary school with four classes. The North Primary School is an important school construction project.
The public participation event for the further development of Salzgittersee, where interested parties had the opportunity to actively participate in the planning process and contribute their opinions, took place in the Kulturscheune in April. The event, organized by the responsible planning office Amsel Kollektiv and the urban planning department, provided a platform for an open exchange and constructive discussions. The draft resolution on the target and structural concept was presented to the council for a decision and adopted at the end of 2024.
In May, the ground-breaking ceremony for the expansion of the Salzgitter branch canal took place at the Wedtlenstedt lock. "The expansion of the branch canal as one of the arteries of transport in the region will secure Salzgitter as a business location in the long term and strengthen inland shipping," emphasized Lord Mayor Frank Klingebiel at the ceremony to mark the start of construction of the branch canal.
It was exactly 40 years ago on Sunday, September 22, that the grand opening of the Osterlinder Bockwindmühle took place at the Salder Castle Municipal Museum in Salzgitter-Salder. The technical monument, which had been shut down since 1972, had been rebuilt there shortly before. The colossus weighs a full 50 tons - and yet it first travelled to the industrial trade fair in Hanover before finding its final home in Salder.
In October, the state associations of BUND and NABU filed a lawsuit against the decision of the Lower Saxony Environment Minister regarding the nuclear waste storage facility Schacht Konrad. In September, the state of Lower Saxony rejected the two environmental associations' application to revoke or withdraw the license for the Konrad mine. Frank Klingebiel, Mayor of the City of Salzgitter, said on behalf of the alliance against Schacht Konrad, which is supported by IG Metall Salzgitter-Peine, Landvolk Braunschweiger Land, Arbeitsgemeinschaft Schacht KONRAD and the City of Salzgitter: "We would have wished for a more courageous decision by the state. It is unacceptable that a dangerous, old project is being held on to with open eyes, just so that the permanent storage of radioactive waste is not left completely bare. We are therefore all the more pleased that we are pulling together as an alliance and with the environmental associations and will do everything in our power to make the lawsuit a success."
At the end of the year, the starting signal was given for the extended continuation of "Salzgitter - safe and clean 2.0". An extended concept with numerous measures was drawn up to sustainably strengthen urban cleanliness and safety. The concept will be implemented in close cooperation with the Salzgitter / Peine / Wolfenbüttel police department and will begin in 2025.
The traditional Adventstreff at the Salder Castle Municipal Museum was once again a wonderful experience for several thousand guests from near and far on the third weekend of Advent.
Finally, digital media: the city's YouTube channel exceeded the 2.3 million film views mark in 2024. Over 3,450 users have already subscribed to it to be informed about new films from the city at short notice. The city's official fan page can also be found on the digital network Facebook. It already has over 5,789 "likes".
The X-channel (Twitter) is also used regularly to disseminate the latest news even faster. Subscribers to the channel receive the news in a compact 280 characters. Almost 1,900 users already follow the city's channel. Since 2023, the city of Salzgitter has also had an Instagram channel, which currently has over 1,938 users.
