The unexploded bomb, which lay at a depth of 2.20 meters, was an American 500-pound bomb from the Second World War. This was revealed by aerial photographs taken during the war and special drillings to analyze the subsoil.

The detonation mechanism, a so-called impact detonator, was safely removed so that the closures could be lifted.

In conclusion, Thorsten Hinrichs, Head of Media Operations at Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH, said: "I would like to expressly thank all my colleagues, the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service (KBD), the employees of the City of Salzgitter's emergency services, the professional fire department and the police who were involved in this operation, which was planned over several months. Thanks to the professional and very constructive cooperation, we managed to bring a truly unusual situation to a successful conclusion."
