Salzgitter

KONRAD finally give up!

Alliance sees criticism of KONRAD mine confirmed!

The Mayor of Salzgitter, Frank Klingebiel, comments on the latest publications of the Tagesschau: "The research results confirm the considerable concerns we have been expressing for years, including about compliance with water regulations. There is no point in holding on to a project that is more than 23 years old and therefore completely misguided today at any price. This can neither be right nor legally compliant and cannot be communicated to the people in our region. The slavish adherence to an outdated planning approval decision that obviously does not meet today's requirements also undermines the trust of the people in our region in the responsible decision-makers. As alliance partners, we therefore agree that the approval granted in 2002 must finally be revoked. And we renew our demand for an immediate halt to construction."

Ludwig Wasmus, Chairman of the KONRAD Shaft Working Group: "If even Mr. Thomauske, who has tried to push the project through for many years, now admits that a barrel can never be stored in KONRAD shaft on the basis of the current permit, the ripcord must finally be pulled. We need a new, proper search procedure to find a safe site for the storage of hazardous waste - KONRAD mine is the wrong one!"

Matthias Wilhelm, 1st authorized representative of IG Metall Salzgitter-Peine: "A lot of money is currently being invested in the future of the industry located in Salzgitter. These forward-looking projects should not be jeopardized by holding on to unfeasible projects such as the storage of nuclear waste in Schacht Konrad. It is not easy to abandon old projects and processes and initiate new ones. However, this is often the only way to secure the future. This is true in industry and it must also be true in the public sector for projects like Schacht Konrad."

Petra Wassmann, KONRAD representative of NABU Lower Saxony and Susanne Gerstner, Chairwoman of BUND Lower Saxony: "We see ourselves fully vindicated in our action for the revocation of the approval of the KONRAD mine and now expect those responsible to take the right step and finally abandon the project."

The Salzgitter against KONRAD Shaft alliance consists of the city of Salzgitter, IG Metall Salzgitter-Peine, Landvolk Braunschweiger Land and the KONRAD Shaft working group and supports the lawsuit filed by NABU and BUND in October 2024 to have the planning approval decision revoked.
