Salzgitter

Painted destinies

Two young women pull a boat full of refugees swimming behind them and bring people in great need from the sea to the mainland. Their deed is simultaneously praised and accused. The painter Annette Bindernagel was so impressed by this story that she painted it.

She is showing this painting alongside eight other works under the title "Search for Hope" from September 9 to January 16, 2026 in the Salzgitter Bad City Library.

The theme of humanity has moved the artist since the first major wave of refugees. "Pictures are the best way for me to express what moves me. The pictures give me the opportunity to use my language of color to make a statement for people in need," says Annette Bindernagel.

Inspired to engage more intensively with this topic, Annette Bindernagel supported a campaign launched by Caritas for sea rescue with the slogan "Humanity must not perish". She painted a picture for this purpose. Since then, Annette Bindernagel has not lost sight of the situation of boat refugees. "I try to find out from the news and other sources of information what motivates people to flee. And the story then becomes a picture. That is my message and the call to viewers to look closely and always remain human," says Annette Bindernagel, explaining why she has made flight and humanity the subject of her paintings.

Annette Bindernagel has been painting since childhood. She later had painting and drawing lessons with a professor in Dresden and attended the folk art school in Jena. She paints realistically and expressionistically because this is how she can best express herself. The nine paintings she exhibited in Salzgitter Bad were mainly created using the oil technique.

Following the exhibition "Mediterranean Views" in the city library in Lebenstedt with colorful, beautiful motifs of southern European places, the show in Salzgitter Bad is an equally colorful presentation with an intense statement about a topic that is still topical.

Information: The exhibition "Search for Hope" can be seen from September 9 to January 16, 2026 in the city library in Salzgitter Bad (Marktplatz 11) during opening hours (Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 10 am to 6 pm; Wednesday from 9 am to 6 pm and Saturday from 9 am to 1 pm.
