"80 years since the end of the war": to mark this day of remembrance, many interested people took part in the special tour of the Salzgitter city archives.

The focus was on original sources that provided insights into the period from the invasion of the American troops on April 10/11, 1945 to the free elections on October 13, 1946.

The tour covered four thematic blocks: 1. invasion 2. living conditions (population movements, housing shortage, food shortage) 3. denazification 4. elections.

Among other things, the following were presented: official announcements, applications in accordance with the "War Property Damage Ordinance", personal accounts of experiences, minutes of committee meetings and correspondence from administrative offices.

One special feature was the film "Memories. Post-war years in Salzgitter" from the city archive from 1995, from which an excerpt was shown. In it, contemporary witnesses talk about the invasion and how they experienced the post-war period.

The citizens expressed their thanks for this informative event and were impressed by the contemporary documents.

The tour was "fully booked", which is why not all those interested were able to take part. Another date is therefore planned for the fall.
