Tradition to listen to: Carillon can be heard again daily at Lebenstedt town hall

From now on, the Steigerlied chimes four times a day at Lebenstedt town hall.

Until around the year 2000, there was already a chime at the town hall in Lebenstedt. After a defect, no suitable replacement parts could be procured. As a result, it was dismantled.

As part of the budget consultations for the 2023/2024 double budget, the council decided to restore the carillon. The application was approved by the Salzgitter City Council on 26.01.2023.

After intensive examination of the possible implementation, the city's own facility management, purchasing and logistics department opted for a digital solution: the Steigerlied is played from a media server using two loudspeakers on the roof of the town hall atrium.

City planning officer Michael Tacke explains: "We first examined how the council's order could be implemented in a cost-effective and low-maintenance way. The digital implementation with loudspeakers costs around 7,000 euros. A real carillon would have cost more than ten times as much. In this way, we are combining a return to our mining history with the need to save public money."

The Steigerlied carillon at the town hall in Lebenstedt can now be heard every day at 9 am, 12 pm, 3 pm and 6 pm.
