The young people were accompanied by Tamara Hagen, responsible for international youth work, and André Greco, media educator. Both work in the children and youth development department of the city of Salzgitter. The young people were actively involved in the planning of the tour.
The first stop on the trip was Brussels. In addition to the sights of the city, a visit to the "Experience Europe" exhibition was on the agenda. This exhibition provides information about the work of the European Union institutions.
They then traveled through the Eurotunnel to London and Oxford before the highlight of the trip: a visit to the twin town of Swindon. The young people were welcomed there by Deputy Mayor Neil Hopkins and Councillor Kevin Small. Kevin Small was honored in Salzgitter in 2018 for his services to Swindon's town twinning with Salzgitter, which has existed for 50 years this year. He remained true to his committed style of cooperation at this meeting too and arranged direct contact with the youth work in Swindon.
They then returned to Salzgitter via Brussels and Cologne. All participants drew a very positive conclusion: many adventures traveling through Europe by train, new impressions as young Europeans and a very warm welcome in Salzgitter's twin town of Swindon. Many of the participants were inspired to return there as part of a joint project with the twin town. "We definitely want to continue the cooperation with Swindon in the context of youth work," emphasizes Tamara Hagen.
