Salzgitter

Youth welfare committee on site in Neuwerk

A total of twelve members of the Youth Welfare Committee and employees of the city's Children, Youth and Family Department visited the Salzgitter youth and education camp on Neuwerk Island from August 25 to 26 as part of an information trip.

After a detailed tour of the camp and an "Action Bound Rally" to get to know the island, the participants discussed the unique selling points, the general conditions of the camp and its future development with Dr. Roswitha Krum, Chairwoman of the Neuwerk Youth Camp Association. They all agreed that the location on the island is a special place for the children to gain new experiences. Above all, the natural surroundings, the distance from home and the wagon ride through the mudflats are new experiences beyond the omnipresent digital world.

City youth worker Martina Malak also explained the challenges that the staff face in everyday camp life. Ferries are often canceled due to weather conditions and the working hours are challenging, but they are definitely worth it just because of the great feedback from the children and young people taking part in the camp. The many activities, the good food and the work of the full-time and part-time staff are what make the youth and education camp such a success.

The participants agreed that despite changes in children's lives, the camp, as the unofficial 32nd district of Salzgitter, is indispensable for working with children and young people and should be developed further in line with future requirements.

In conclusion, Dr. Dirk Härdrich, City Councillor for Youth, said: "It was immensely important for us to present this special facility in our city to our councillors, who do important work in the Youth Welfare Committee. Here, children and young people have unique experiences in nature, experience team spirit and learn something for their whole lives."
