Max Mutzke on his performance at the Kultursommer Salzgitter

On Sunday, August 3, at 8 pm, Max Mutzke and his band will perform in the courtyard of the Salder Castle Municipal Museum in Salzgitter-Salder as part of the Kultursommer Salzgitter. He spoke about his performance in an interview here.

Max Mutzke, musician and author

What can your fans in Salzgitter look forward to in particular?

I'm really looking forward to the concert in Salzgitter - it's basically my last gig before I go on vacation. For me, it feels a bit like the last day of school: I'm in a good mood, full of anticipation for the time off with my family and that's exactly the energy I'm bringing to the stage. It's also one of the very few gigs this year with my own band - because of my big SWR tour with the big band, we're not allowed to play that often at the moment. That makes this evening all the more special. I've often heard that our concerts resonate in people's hearts for a long time - I hope that will also be the case in Salzgitter.

How has your music changed over the years?

I'm more relaxed today - musically and personally. In the past, everything had to be as complex and virtuoso as possible. Today, I love it when music can just groove and have space. A lot has also changed in terms of content: I've become more political, not only in my songs, but also on stage. Overall, my music is a reflection of my development. And that never stops.

What are your musical plans for 2025?

2025 will be exciting: A highlight in 2025 is definitely my tour with the SWR Big Band. The show is modern, funky, with R'n'B vibes and a top-class band. I have two fantastic backing singers from the USA with me - it will be a thrilling live experience. We're also releasing a live record - it's going to be real collector's item material.

What drives you to keep reinventing yourself musically?

Quite simply: variety. I love discovering new things musically. I don't want to commit myself to one genre - just like you don't want to eat the same thing every day. Sometimes it's soul, sometimes pop, then jazz or funk. This freedom to keep trying new things is the best thing about music for me.

What does it mean to you to sing in German?

In German, I can express myself in a much more differentiated way - that gives me more options, but also makes writing much more difficult. Sometimes I struggle for days with a single sentence until it expresses exactly what I want to say. But when it fits, it's an indescribably good feeling. Some topics only work for me in German, while others simply sound better in English. That's why I need both - both are part of me.
