The city library is taking this special day as an opportunity to set library highlights and raise awareness of books, reading and the many opportunities in libraries. "In the libraries in Lebenstedt, Salzgitter-Bad and Fredenberg, we have set up some cozy places that invite you to linger and read in our buildings on each of our opening days," says Sylvia Fiedler, Head of the City Library.
The "Night of the Libraries" is taking place nationwide for the first time. Libraries in all 16 federal states are opening their doors under the motto "Knowledge.Share.Discover" and want to draw even more attention to the diverse offers and services of libraries and invite people to experience their libraries in a new way. The nationwide Night of Libraries is an initiative of the German Library Association.
Silent Reading
Reading in peace and quiet, together - but each person for themselves - that's what "silent reading" is all about. The city library in Lebenstedt is opening its doors for this on April 4, from 6 to 8 pm.
"With 'Silent Reading', we especially want to recommend our reading corners as places to pause and, of course, the idea of coming to the library to read in comfort," says Fiedler, explaining this campaign. At home, in addition to household chores and everyday life, as well as the constant loud and demanding presence of digital media, there is often not enough peace and quiet to take the time to read. One of the aims of "Silent Reading" is to reawaken this comforting feeling. That is why cell phones are taboo on this evening. Drinks such as water, coffee and tea will be provided. Registration is not required.
If you don't have your own book to hand, you might find your favorite book at the book flea market during the "Night of the Libraries". The flea market, which starts on April 1, will also be open during the regular opening hours of the city library on Friday, April 4, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and invites you to look, browse and buy.
Reading by author Lena Johannson
But you can do more than just read and buy books on this day. The bestselling author Lena Johannson - who has made a name for herself with historical novels with a maritime theme - will be reading from her book "Clara & Rilke" at 6.30 p.m. in the town library in Salzgitter-Bad.
Tickets for the reading are available in advance for 10 euros at the municipal libraries in Lebenstedt and Salzgitter-Bad. Pre-registration by telephone on 05341 / 839-3434 or by e-mail to stadtbibliothekstadt.salzgitterde Tickets at the box office cost 12 euros.
