Christian Striese, Second Mayor of the city of Salzgitter, welcomed the guests on behalf of the Lord Mayor Frank Klingebiel, the city council and the administration. He thanked all participants and contributors for the offers and hands-on activities for the community. His special thanks went to Petra Behrens-Schröter and Markus Meyer from Diakonie Salzgitter, Petra Stürmer from Wohnbau Salzgitter from the WoWie Treff with her team and Hans-Werner Eisfeld and his team from the Advisory Council for People with Disabilities.
The Second Mayor invited the guests to find out more about the planned construction project and to share their ideas in the "survey corner" on how the community facility could be used after the conversion work.
Andreas Bittner, Head of the Department for Urban Redevelopment and Socially Integrative City, was delighted with the interest shown in the planned major conversion project in the Seeviertel district, which will begin in spring 2026 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2027. The plan is that the new facility can then be used for activities by the school as well as by the Seevierteltreff, other institutions or clubs. His team and he are therefore looking forward to hearing ideas from interested parties on how the rooms should be used after the renovation.
The varied program was very well received by the many young and old guests:
The advisory board for people with disabilities invited the children to take part in hands-on activities. Diakonie from the Seevierteltreff and Wohnbau Salzgitter from the WoWie Treff supported the event with drinks and cookies. Visitors were able to chat over a cup of coffee or tea and talk about their previous school and assembly hall experiences.
A special feature was the tour of the assembly hall, which has been "sleeping beauty" for many years and is partially closed and dilapidated. The large windows, the wooden floor and the shape of the auditorium appealed to the participants. This charm is to be preserved and implemented according to the plans of the "Akzente architects". "We can already look forward to the inauguration," was the unanimous opinion.
Information on barrier-free conversion of the school auditorium
Since 2008, the city of Salzgitter has been undergoing a comprehensive, integrated and long-term urban redevelopment process in the Seeviertel district, which is being supported with funds from the "Growth and Sustainable Renewal" urban development program (until 2020 urban redevelopment) and is due to be completed in 2027.
By resolution of the Salzgitter City Council on 21.07.2021, it was decided to supplement the urban development concept for the overall "Seeviertel urban redevelopment" measure with the aim of converting the auditorium of St. Michael's elementary school into a community facility.
The plans include Barrier-free access; separation from the school building, new entrance to the street; elevator; basic structure to be retained; extension for multifunctional room, external staircase as second escape route; energy-efficient refurbishment in accordance with GEG.
The new community facility will create flexible rooms that will enable a variety of different uses (consultations, training courses, events, school performances, etc.).
The specific design of the future use will be determined by the future operator.
What happens next?
- The ideas of the citizens will be evaluated.
- Following the design and implementation planning, tenders will be invited, contracts will be awarded and then construction will begin in spring 2026. Completion is scheduled for mid-2027.
- Important: The public will be informed before the start of the conversion and the associated work.
Costs: The costs are estimated at approx. 3.9 million euros gross and are covered up to 90 percent by the budget funds set aside and by the refinancing of urban development funds under the urban development funding program for growth and sustainable renewal (old: urban redevelopment).
Keyword: community facilities:
- Public utility facilities are facilities that serve the general public. The focus must be on the common good. Examples: Club houses, community centers, meeting rooms.
- In Salzgitter-Bad, there are two community facilities: Arche 4 and NOW.
- In Lebenstedt, the school auditorium of St. Michael's elementary school is to be converted into a community facility.
- In addition, there is the open neighborhood park at the Am Ziesberg elementary school, which was redesigned as part of the "Soziale Stadt Salzgitter-Bad/Ost- und Westsiedlung" redevelopment project and can be used by the public.
