The corresponding "i-Kfz" portal can now be used to register new vehicles, re-register deregistered vehicles, transfer registered vehicles with and without a change of owner, daily registrations and deregistrations online. This means that the 4th stage of Internet-based vehicle registration has also been implemented in Salzgitter.
Citizens now have a number of advantages: It saves the trip to the registration office as well as the waiting time on site and, thanks to the fully automated check, it is possible to drive off immediately with the registered vehicle. In addition, the costs for internet-based registration are also reduced compared to on-site registration.

How does i-Kfz work?
i-Kfz can be used by both natural and legal persons.
Private individuals need the following for this:
- BundID account (https://id.bund.de/de)
- an identity card, an eID card or an electronic residence permit with activated eID function including personal pin (if the eID function of your identity card or eID card is not activated, the function can be activated in the BürgerCenter)
- Smartphone or card reader
- ID card app2
Legal entities identify themselves via their company account with an Elster certificate(https://mein-unternehmenskonto.de/mup/start) (opens in a new tab). Decommissioning can also be carried out without electronic identification using only the vehicle documents and license plates.
To be able to use i-Kfz, the vehicle must have registration documents that were issued after 01.01.2015 or 01.01.2018, as the required security codes have only been available on the registration certificates and stamp stickers since these dates. Depending on the registration process, further documents may be required.
Payment is made by credit card or PayPal.
If all the necessary requirements are met, citizens can drive off immediately after successfully registering their vehicle. For this purpose, they receive a provisional registration certificate, which is available for retrieval in the portal. The vehicle registered online may be driven on public roads for ten days with the certificate and license plates without the seal and main inspection sticker. Within this period, the vehicle documents and license plate stickers are sent by post after final processing by the registration office.
Major customer interface:
The i-Kfz-Portal can only be used for registrations relating to your own person or company. Registrations for other persons are not possible.
Exceptions to this are - in addition to decommissioning - applications via the so-called major customer interface. Legal entities can register with the Federal Motor Transport Authority as major customers if they carry out more than 500 registration processes per year
(e.g. car dealerships, insurance companies, registration service providers).
Citizens can also have registrations carried out online via such third-party providers. However, the City of Salzgitter would like to point out that the registration authorities have no influence on the offers and, in particular, the pricing of third-party providers and that some of them charge significantly higher costs - even compared to on-site registration. It is therefore advisable to take a look at the legal notice when selecting the website used and to pay attention to the origin of the provider.
