Salzgitter

Statement by Lord Mayor Frank Klingebiel

on the AFD motion in the Bundestag of 27.08.2025 to cancel the federal allocation of €700,000/year to the Endlager Konrad Stiftungsgesellschaft mbH

"On 27.08.2025, the AFD parliamentary group in the Bundestag requested that the federal allocation of €700,000/year to the Endlager Konrad Stiftungsgesellschaft mbH be canceled without replacement. This AFD motion in the Bundestag makes me really angry. For 5 years - from 2007 to 2011 - I personally and alone with the then Federal Environment Ministers Sigmar Gabriel and Dr. Norbert Röttgen as well as the Minister President of Lower Saxony, David McAllister, successfully fought hard in various discussions for a million-euro compensation for Salzgitter. On 01.01.In 2012, I finally succeeded in establishing the Endlager Konrad Stiftungsgesellschaft mbH, which is supported by the federal government, the state and the city of Salzgitter as founding partners. With its allocations from the federal government and the energy industry in the millions, it does not relieve the municipal budget, but rather exclusively strengthens voluntary work and supports our diverse landscape of non-profit clubs, associations and institutions in their projects in the areas of education and training, sport, art and culture, youth welfare, voluntary fire departments, environmental protection and science with a maximum funding rate of 80% and a very streamlined approval process. The 900 charitable projects funded by our Endlager Konrad Stiftungsgesellschaft mbH since 2012 with a total funding volume of € 22 million would not have been realized without these foundation funds. Social life in our town and the communities of Lengede and Vechelde has been revitalized in its volunteer structures and made fit for the future. The AFD motion in the Bundestag is a slap in the face to every non-profit organization, association and institution in our town and in the communities of Lengede and Vechelde. The damage the AFD parliamentary group wants to inflict on our local people is unbelievable. I am sure that the other parliamentary groups in the Bundestag will reject this AFD motion, which is extremely damaging to our urban society."
