During an on-site visit, Inga Gröschler from Taubenengeln explained that the main aim of the pigeon house is to permanently lure the pigeons away from the balconies and paths and get them to stay in the pigeon house permanently. There, the animals are cared for in a species-appropriate manner and large parts of the eggs laid are replaced with clay eggs with the aim of minimizing the population. She went on to explain: "Urban pigeons are largely descended from feral domestic and carrier pigeons, which have been bred by humans over the centuries from the wild rock pigeon for a variety of purposes. The current start-up phase of the pigeon house is going well and the pigeons from the surrounding area are already spending more than half the day in the pigeon loft. We are very confident that they will settle and live in the loft in the long term."
Jennifer Breit, Chairwoman of Stark für Tier e.V., was delighted: "This project is a complete success and I am delighted with the good cooperation with the city of Salzgitter."
The pigeon house was planned and built by the pigeon angels in close cooperation with the city of Salzgitter. The costs for the project amounted to around 40,000 euros and were funded by the Konradfond. The necessary own contribution was made by the volunteers of the pigeon angels themselves in the form of working hours. Further managed pigeon houses are planned for the future.
First City Councillor Eric Neiseke emphasizes: "I am very happy about the important work of the Stark für Tiere association in Salzgitter. Without the support of the pigeon angels, we as a city would not be able to accomplish this task. I would therefore like to express my sincere thanks to all those involved with Taubenengel Salzgitter. As a city, we also want to support the association in the future with a newly created position of municipal pigeon coordinator, which is currently being advertised."
