City Councillor Michael Tacke welcomed the citizens and explained that all municipalities are legally obliged to draw up a municipal heating plan. The city of Salzgitter must complete such a heating plan by June 30, 2026. Among other things, the heat demand in Salzgitter and the existing and future heat sources must be analyzed. He emphasized the legal mandate of the state of Lower Saxony and the potential that Salzgitter offers as an industrial location.
Patrick Nestler from the Climate Protection and Energy Agency of Lower Saxony then explained the legal basis of municipal heat planning and made it clear that municipal heat planning is a long-term, strategic planning tool that is intended to accompany Salzgitter on its way to a climate-friendly heat supply.
The goals and measures defined in the heat planning serve the city of Salzgitter as a basis for action for the long-term restructuring of the heat supply in the urban area.
The d-fine office commissioned by the city of Salzgitter then presented the initial results of the municipal heat planning in Salzgitter:
The results of the inventory and potential analysis of heat demand, heat demand and heat supply were presented using a profile for the district of Salzgitter-Lebenstedt as an example.
At the end of the event, citizens were able to find out more about the "Legal basis", the "Methodology and technical topics" and the "Digital twin" as a planning tool for creating municipal heat planning and ask their questions, which were answered by employees from the d-fine office and the City of Salzgitter's climate protection management team.
What happens next?
The profiles, which were shown in the presentation by d-fine using the example of Salzgitter-Lebenstedt, will be created for all 31 districts and for all seven localities. In addition, possible development scenarios are selected and described. At least five measures will be developed and the results report formulated.
The municipal heat planning report is expected to be presented to the local councils by the end of the third quarter of 2025.
