Around 1,000 citizens are needed to volunteer on election Sunday to ensure that the election is conducted properly and that votes are counted.
Anyone who is eligible to vote in the Kommunalwahl can help out on an electoral board. They must be at least 16 years old on election day, have been resident in Salzgitter for at least three months and have German citizenship or citizenship of another EU member state. No special prior knowledge is required. The work on the election committee is always carried out together with experienced people who are available to answer questions.
The office of election assistant is an honorary position. The appointed persons staff the 125 ballot box and postal voting districts and help to ensure that the election process runs smoothly on site.
Teamwork is required on election day itself. An electoral board consists of eight people and is made up of an electoral officer, a secretary, the respective deputies and four assessors per electoral district. The tasks of the election committee include issuing the ballot papers, checking the electoral roll, counting the votes and determining the election results.
Preparation for the election begins at 7:30 a.m. - all members of the electoral board must be present at this time. The polling stations are open from 8 am to 6 pm. It is not necessary for all members of the electoral board to be present at all times during this period - each individual poll worker is usually on duty for half a day (in the morning or afternoon, by arrangement with the electoral board).
After the polling stations have closed, the entire electoral board then counts the ballot papers and determines the election result in the respective electoral district.
Depending on the position on the electoral board, an expense allowance of 30 to 55 euros is paid for the voluntary work.
Should there be a run-off in the election of the Lord Mayor, this will take place on September 27, 2026.
Municipal electoral officer, city councillor Michael Tacke, emphasizes how important it is to get involved: "Elections are an important part of democracy. Democracy thrives on citizens actively participating in the political process - for example as a poll worker. That's why everyone should take the opportunity to experience a piece of democracy live on election Sunday."
Anyone who is interested in working as a poll worker and would like to contribute to the success of the Kommunalwahl can already register now.
