First City Councillor Eric Neiseke opened the event by welcoming the participants to the council chamber: "I am delighted that you are here. Many people think that working in a public authority is boring. We would like to refute this cliché today and show you how diverse a city administration is. Our approximately 2,000 employees have numerous tasks. We'll show you some of them today. Zukunftstag is a great opportunity to gain an insight into professions that you wouldn't have been interested in in the first place. Perhaps this will give you an idea or a wish for your future career path."
After a welcoming address by Simone Semmler, Equal Opportunities Officer for the City of Salzgitter, the pupils were divided into smaller groups and put into practice: a total of eight organizational units had prepared an exciting programme and provided an insight into their work.
For example, the children accompanied the Safety, Law and Order Department in setting up a speed camera container, dealt with IT security, got to know the work tasks in surveying technology in the Property Development Department, gained an insight into the work of the Social Pediatric Service or looked over the shoulder of the Ideas and Complaints Department in their work with the defect reporting app.
Two groups spent the morning at the municipal management company, where they learned about the various tasks involved in waste collection, city cleaning and green maintenance.
After having lunch together in the Kulturscheune, the participants learned about municipal activities in a playful way before the day came to an end at around 3 p.m. with many impressions and experiences.
What makes it special: Zukunftstag is organized annually with great commitment by the trainees and dual students of the city of Salzgitter.
