Long Night of Democracy

The Volkshochschule (VHS) of the City of Salzgitter and the City History Working Group invite you to the “Long Night of Democracy” and the lecture “Misogynistic Smear Campaigns” on Thursday, October 1.

Speaker Veronika Kracher says:

“GamerGate, Amber Heard, Imane Khelif, Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf—the right-wing culture war that has been raging for years is repeatedly played out on individual women. They are dehumanized, defamed, and subjected to very real threats. However, the hatred directed at these women—which is particularly rampant in digital spaces—does not arise organically but is regularly stoked by right-wing actors.

Yet these campaigns continue to work time and again, because social media provides a perfect framework for its users to give free rein to their (trans)misogyny. This underlying misogynistic tone ultimately culminates in a global anti-feminist backlash.”

This lecture explores the history and mechanisms of misogynistic hate campaigns and highlights the threat they pose both to those affected and to democracy itself.
