Salzgitter

Reading inspires and connects

"Books are flying carpets into the realm of fantasy" is the solution to the library rally to which the Salzgitter City Library and Wohnbau Salzgitter invited participants on World Book Day. The task: to find this quote by US author James Daniel on the shelves of the city library.

Six-year-old Finja Brinkmann is just as happy about her prize as Ines Melzian (left) and Wolfgang Voss. Sylvia Fiedler, head of the city library, (second from left) and Petra Stürmer, qualified social pedagogue and co-initiator of the campaign and responsible for social management at Wohnbau Salzgitter, offer their congratulations.

Many children and adults accepted the invitation and set off on a tour of the city library in Lebenstedt and Salzgitter-Bad to discover the words of the solution set in eight prominent places.

"Tracking down the words we were looking for was a challenge, but also an original idea. Combining the whole thing with a tour of the city library was great fun," was the unanimous opinion of the participants at the prize-giving ceremony in Lebenstedt City Library.

Finja Brinkmann, Wolfgang Voss and Ines Melzian were delighted to receive book vouchers, a practical drinking bottle with a library print and giveaways provided by the city library and Wohnbau Salzgitter.

"World Book Day is always a great opportunity to celebrate reading and the world of books," says Sylvia Fiedler, head of the city library. Reading fans young and old were out and about at all three locations to find the solution to this year's rally. The cozy reading corners only invited them to rest for a short while before they continued puzzling... The browsing and lingering will certainly be made up for on the next visit...

"The city library has a wide range of media for all generations. We are happy to welcome citizens who visit our buildings and want to use the facilities or get to know them," says Sylvia Fiedler.

Petra Stürmer, a qualified social education worker from co-initiator Wohnbau Salzgitter, was also pleased with the lively interest in the campaign and said: "We want our tenants to feel comfortable and also experience the residential environment as an attractive place to live. The joint campaign with the city library was therefore another project in which Wohnbau was happy to participate."

Information:

On April 23, bookshops, publishers, libraries, schools and reading enthusiasts across Germany celebrate a major reading festival on UNESCO World Book Day. A regional tradition has become an international event: in 1995, UNESCO declared April 23rd "World Book Day", the global holiday for reading, books and the rights of authors. The UN organization for culture and education was inspired by the Catalan custom of giving roses and books on the name day of the popular saint St. George. In addition to this custom, April 23rd also has special significance for another reason: it is the anniversary of the deaths of William Shakespeare and Miguel de Cervantes.
