June 22 marks the 85th anniversary of the German invasion of the Soviet Union. To mark the occasion, the city history working group is focusing on the fate of Soviet prisoners of war in Salzgitter.
The High Command of the Wehrmacht regarded Soviet prisoners of war as a potential danger even after their capture. This was one of the reasons why the prisoners were systematically undersupplied and died in large numbers, especially in the first few months.
But what was the situation like in Salzgitter? In which camps were the prisoners held, and which individual fates can still be traced today? Answers will be given in the lecture by Jesse Holtmeyer from the working group.
